Writing exercises can be a way to prod a lazy muse. Next time you find yourself contemplating a nap instead of a novel try one of the exercises below. They are a few of the ones I've found helpful, in my teaching and in waking my own lolling imagination.
Be sure to check back for new ideas from time to time. I plan to keep adding exercises. Let me know which ones you've found particularly helpful. Please share any of your own exercises and techniques for getting yourself going. Email me. I'll post your ideas here.
•Write the names of ten things on separate pieces of paper. Pick three at random. Now write a story that uses these three elements, making them integral to the plot.
•Do an interior monologue from your mother's point of view.
•Open a book at random and let your finger fall wherever. Read the sentence and build a story around it.
